1398: Confucianism – Philosophy and Ideology (SoSe 2013)

Since the second half of the 1980s China has experienced a 'Confucian revival', a movement that has manifested itself in all different varieties of Confucianism (culture, religion, ideology, philosophy, tradition).
This seminar will explore two dimensions of contemporary Confucianism in China, the political-philosophical and the ideological. The discussion of the contemporary topics will be preceeded by an exploration of major aspects of classical Confucianism.
The major part of the course will comprise texts from some of the major representatives of the political stream of New Confucianism as well as analyses of some important aspects of Confucianism as ideology, for example Confuciansims as a major influence on economic development, a form of nationalism and and factor in China's foreign policy.
